Legacy-to-AI Bridge:
Modernization Without Migration

Legacy modernization does not need to be a multi-million migration project. Most IT leaders face the same dilemma: external pressure to innovate, stable core systems on the inside. Shutting down a 20-year-old SAP R/3 or an AS/400 system takes years and millions. Xanevo builds the bridge instead: a middleware that extracts data from your legacy systems, refines it with AI, and writes structured results back. We respect the monolith.

4 to 12 weeks time to value. Five-figure investment per use case. Zero operational downtime

How does AI integration into legacy systems work?

AI integration into legacy systems works through a decoupled middleware layer that we call the bridge. The bridge extracts data from the legacy system (via API, database access, or RPA if needed), processes it through AI models, and writes results back in a structured way. The core system stays untouched. The AI does not live inside SAP, it sits in front of it and behind it.

The principle is a brownfield approach: no greenfield migration, no proprietary development inside the core system, no rip and replace. The bridge respects the standards of your ERP vendor (BAPIs, documented interfaces, validated paths) and stays away from proprietary modifications. That means you keep your vendor support, your upgrade path, and your transactional integrity.

SAP AI integration is the most common use case, but we are system-agnostic. Whether it is SAP S/4HANA with Fiori or the blue GUI of R/3, Microsoft Dynamics NAV or Dynamics 365, an IBM AS/400 with green screen, or a self-built SQL database: there is a fitting connector strategy for every variant. Where APIs exist, we use them. Where they do not, we work with RPA and terminal emulation. In every case: decoupled, transaction-safe, and with read/write access through validated paths.

The old way vs. the new way

The old way (rip and replace)

Replace the existing system, rebuild from the ground up.

  • Migration projects take 2 to 5 years, often with delays.
  • Investments reach seven-figure ranges, often without a clear outcome.
  • During migration: parallel operation, high risk, locked IT resources.
  • Employees have to relearn, processes are destabilized, institutional knowledge is lost.
  • AI value materializes only after completion, years from now.

The new way (Legacy-to-AI Bridge)

Extend the existing system, place a middleware layer on top.

  • First use cases go productive in 4 to 12 weeks, not years.
  • Five-figure investment per use case, scaling happens iteratively.
  • Zero operational downtime. The bridge is decoupled, the legacy system keeps running.
  • Employees keep their familiar interfaces, automation happens in the background.
  • AI value is measurable immediately, use case by use case.

Connectors for your landscape

Which connector applies depends on the legacy system in place. For the most common platforms we have proven integration patterns. For special cases, we design the connector during the architecture review.

SAP Integration

AI processes for SAP R/3, S/4HANA, and Fiori. We use BAPIs and standard interfaces so your upgrade path remains intact and vendor support is not at risk.

Microsoft Dynamics

Automation for Dynamics NAV (Navision), AX, and Dynamics 365. Connectors for cloud and on-premise variants, with full transactional integrity.

AS/400 and Mainframe

Modernization for IBM i systems. We read the green screen via terminal emulation but only write back through validated paths. Also for mainframe environments.

Multi-Step Pipelines

When a process touches multiple systems (such as SAP plus CRM plus shop), multi-step pipelines orchestrate the data flow. One pipeline, many systems, transaction-safe.

AI Workflows

The intelligent layer between systems: classification, decision logic, and workflow automation built on the data from your legacy systems.

Custom Connectors

For proprietary in-house systems or uncommon platforms we build the fitting wrapper. REST, SOAP, direct SQL access, or RPA, depending on the situation.

Which starting point fits your situation?

Integration projects do not all start the same way. Depending on where you stand today and what risk you want to minimize, a different entry point makes sense. Three engagement models, clearly defined by starting position and outcome.

Tier 1

Integration Audit

We want to understand the integration potential.

For you if:

You have a grown IT landscape with legacy systems and sense that AI integration would make sense, but you do not know where to start technically or which use cases offer the biggest lever.

What you get:

We map your system landscape, identify the critical data flows, and prioritize use cases by impact and effort. The outcome is a concrete integration roadmap with clear next steps, not a generic audit report.

Effort:

2 weeks, defined scope

Outcome:

Architectural clarity, a prioritized roadmap

Tier 2

Integration Project

We want to connect specific systems.

For you if:

You know the use case and want to achieve the first measurable outcome. For example: automate order entry in SAP, make AS/400 data available for analytics, or connect an AI workflow to your ERP.

What you get:

A defined project with a clear scope: specific systems, specific processes, specific outcome. Build-out of the bridge including connectors, workflow logic, and quality gates. Your IT team is prepared for operations.

Effort:

8 to 12 weeks, defined outcome

Outcome:

Productive bridge, documented, transaction-safe

Tier 3

Managed Integration

We need ongoing integration maintenance.

For you if:

You have several connectors in operation and need someone to maintain them, adapt them to new system updates, and add new use cases iteratively.

What you get:

Ongoing service: monitoring of the connectors, adaptation to system updates (such as SAP patches, Dynamics migrations), expansion to new use cases as needed. Your IT team focuses on the core business.

Effort:

Ongoing service, monthly retainer model

Outcome:

Integration as an operating system, not a project

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The bridge uses only documented standard interfaces of your ERP vendor, such as SAP BAPIs or the official Dynamics APIs. We do not make proprietary modifications to the existing system. That means: your vendor support stays fully intact, and so does your upgrade path.

The bridge is decoupled from the core system and low-maintenance. During system updates only the connector components typically need adjustment. The AI module and the workflow logic stay untouched. Under the Managed Integration model we handle these adjustments for you.

Yes. The bridge can be installed fully on-premise, with gateway or tunnel solutions for secure communication. For industries with sensitive data (finance, healthcare, defense) this is often the standard. Cloud, hybrid, or pure on-premise are all valid deployment options.

// READY?

Innovation without risk. Evolution, not revolution.

Your legacy system is the backbone of your operations. Replacing it is rarely necessary, often too risky, and always too expensive. The bridge extends it with AI capabilities without putting operations at risk. Let us run an architecture review together.
